Architecture creates sensation. I translate it with images
Lascaux IV
Architecture designed by
Snøhetta. Montignac, France. 2026
Standing beneath these paintings, you feel connected to those who created them 21,000 years ago.
Lascaux IV is a faithful reproduction of the original cave, a tribute to prehistoric art. Snøhetta cut the building into the hillside like a fault line. The concrete and light slowly carry you back in time. I followed that light with my camera, from the skylights down into the darkness of the cave. Inside, artists and geologists spent three years recreating every painting, engraving and sign of the original cave with millimetric precision.
Four teenagers discovered the prehistoric cave in 1940. In 1963, André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, closed it to protect it. Lascaux IV opened in 2016, recreating the emotion of the original discovery.
This place and its paintings are a reminder of the value of creating and preserving art, and of how it connects us to our past. Photographing them is my way of taking part in that.
